Professional Nursing Services for High Risk Pregnancy

Health Services for High Risk Pregnancy

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes, also known as gestational diabetes mellitus, GDM, or diabetes during pregnancy, is a type of diabetes that only pregnant women get. If a woman gets diabetes when she is pregnant, but never had it before, then she has gestational diabetes. Each woman should have a specific plan designed just for her needs, but there are some general ways to stay healthy with gestational diabetes:

  • Know your blood sugar and keep it under control
  • Eat a healthy diet – Your health care provider can make a plan with the best diet for you
  • Get regular, moderate physical activity – Exercise can help control blood sugar levels
  • Keep records of meals and exercise

Newborn Nurses has tremendous services to help patients with Gestational Diabetes. These services can be provided through insurance companies or paid for privately.

  • Skilled nursing visits on a weekly basis.
    • Goals of visit: review calories to be consumed per day, test blood sugar, and review tips to keep you and your baby healthy.
  • Case Management
    • The nurse case manager will communicate with the visiting nurse, patient, and the doctor to ensure good communication and ultimately the patient will receive any additional services deemed necessary.
  • Companion/ Certified Home Health Aide
    • We provide companions or certified home health aides to help care for our patients at home. This service alleviates stress by having an extra set of hands to help with daily chores especially when the patient is on bed rest.

Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH)

When a pregnant woman’s blood pressure is elevated frequently throughout her pregnancy she can be diagnosed with pregnancy induced hypertension. Often this diagnosis occurs after 20 weeks of gestation. Some warning signs of PIH:

  • Protein in the urine
  • Blurred vision

Newborn Nurses has wonderful services to offer patients with this diagnosis. These services can be provided through insurance or paid for privately.

  • Skilled nursing visits on a weekly basis.
    • The visiting nurse will help review testing urine for protein, assess blood pressure, and reinforce teaching the patient on how to take her own blood pressure.
  • Case Management
    • Our nurse case manager will keep open communication with the visiting nurse, the patient and the doctor.
  • Companion/ Certified Home Health Aide
