Heading “home for the holidays” is an American tradition. Families scattered by circumstance and time converge again under one roof to give thanks and celebrate. These traditions bond families despite forces of the modern age that tend to separate them. The holidays also give family members of all generations an opportunity to see how one another are doing and whether anyone may need help or encouragement.

Home for the Holidays: Assuring Senior Parents are Safe

It’s frequently older parents who host the traditional holiday festivities that are so crucial to the long-term stability of families. Because of this, many people see parents they haven’t seen in quite a while, perhaps even since last year’s holidays. If you are visiting an elderly loved one over the holidays, you can use the visit as an opportunity to assess their well-being in addition to enjoying quality time with your family. To help inform the nature of these conversations, we created a handy, printable checklist, which you can download by clicking the link below. Those of you who haven’t seen your parents in a while may have an advantage at detecting issues: A warning sign that has cropped up since your last visit will be more readily apparent to you than if you had witnessed it develop gradually.

Of course you don’t want to spend Christmas dinner talking about medications, but you can reserve some time during the beginning or end of your visit to go over these items without interrupting or detracting from the joyfulness and dignity of the festivities. According to a Harris Interactive survey we commissioned, 43% of adult children who will visit their parents or in-laws this holiday season are planning to discuss issues such as health, finances, housing, mobility and memory loss.
