IVIG Series: Treatment For Chronic Sinusitis

 IVIG Series: Chronic Sinusitis

The World Health Organizations recognizes more than 150 primary immunodeficiency diseases. Chronic Sinusitis is probably one of the most common complaints among patients with a primary immune deficiency (PIDD).  It is a persistent inflamation of the mucosal lining characterized by symptoms lasting for more than 12 weeks, where the sinuses become inflamed and swollen.  In addition to a healthy diet, and drinking non-caffeinated beverages, other regimens can be done to make breathing less difficult.  Prior to patients starting any treatments, they should always discuss it with their physician.

Keeping the nasal passageways clean and reducing inflammation are important steps and will help you breather freely.  Physicians may recommend using a saline nasal irrigation system to remove daily irritants and remove excessive mucous buildup, and may order steroidal nasal sprays to use along nasal irrigation to help with the inflammation.  Antibiotics and nebulized antibiotics may also be prescribed to help with infections.

Chronic, recurring bacterial sinusitis can be frustrating to treat with oral antibiotics.  Additionally, despite treatments with these therapies or surgery, bacterial infections can still occur.  The normal immune system plays an important function in protecting us against infection.  Patients with primary immunodeficiency diseases commonly have an increased risk of infection which may include repeated infections.  Fortunately, with proper medical care, many patients can live full and independent lives.

IVIG Series: 4 Things You NEED To Know About IVIG

What is IVIG?

Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a solution of highly purified immunoglobulin G, derived from large pools of human plasma that contains antibodies against a broad spectrum of bacterial and viral agents.

IVIG is also known as IGG, IVIG, IGIV, immune globulin, immunoglobulin, and immune globulin intravenous (human) (systemic).

Take a look at 4 IMPORTANT things that most don’t know about IVIG:

  1. IVIG can be given safely in the convenience of your home. It can be given either intravenously (IV through the veins) or subcutaneously (under the skin).
  2. NBN Infusions will send a nurse with all necessary supplies to complete your infusion, in the comfort of your own home.
  3. NBN Infusions will even help you and your doctor complete all necessary documents. Our goal is to make the process as easy as possible so you can focus on getting the treatment that you need.
  4. Insurance companies can be challenging to deal with in the IVIG treatment approval process sometimes. So, NBN Infusions will help you deal with your insurance process so that you can get approved for your IVIG treatments in a timely manner.

Why do you need IVIG?

IVIG is used to treat primary and secondary immune deficiencies, autoimmune, infections and neuroimmunological disorders.

Patients with primary immune deficiencies usually receive treatment therapy for life.  Patients being treated for autoimmune neuromuscular disorders and rheumatologic conditions tend to receive therapy for a more limited time period, this could be as little as a few months up to a few years.

The goal is to provide immune deficient patients with the protection that they need, allowing them to replace and maintain adequate antibody levels protecting them from infection.

What Does IVIG Treat?

IVIG Therapy has been used extensively in the treatment and prevention of a variety of infectious and inflammatory diseases. Patients with compromised Immune systems who have these conditions often benefit from the passive immunity provided by IVIG therapy.

IVIG is used in patients with primary immunodeficiencies and certain conditions associated with B-cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Pediatric HIV, and Bone Marrow Transplant. IVIG is also utilized to raise platelet counts in patients with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura and to treat the symptoms related to other clinical conditions such as Kawasaki Syndrome.

Various other diseases and immune disorders where IVIG is used include:

  • Chronic Sinusitis
  • Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP)
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Myasthenia Gravis(MG)
  • Systenic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)
  • Autoimmune Diabetic Neuropathy
  • Polymyositis
  • Multifocal Motor Neuropathy (MMN)
  • Dermatomyositis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
  • Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID)
  • Hypogammaglobulinemia
  • Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID)
  • Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome (WAS)
