There is Help for Children with Autism
New Behavioral Network, Newborn Nurses, Uncategorized Comments OffFamilies with a child diagnosed on the autism spectrum often feel isolated and confused. Consensus in the many medical communities, including the Academy of Pediatrics and the Center for Disease Control, is that early diagnosis and treatment results in better outcomes. Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects an entire family system. Families often find it necessary to seek out services that provide intervention and support.
Research confirms that programs which utilize the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis are improving the lives of children and their families. New Behavioral Network’s, PRIDE Program, offers evidence based, comprehensive services for the autism community to maximize the personal potential of each individual.
The PRIDE program implements interventions using FBA, (Functional Behavior Assessments), discrete trial training, and positive behavioral supports.
An example of the success of the PRIDE program and our service delivery is evidenced in the following case study. Staff began working with an eleven year old child who was exhibiting severe aggressive behaviors. The behaviors included biting, hair pulling, and scratching. Family members and school staff recognized the need for intervention and requested services. Our staff began with a Functional Behavioral Assessment, which included collaboration with family and school staff. Through the FBA, staff identified the sources for the child’s behaviors and developed an individualized plan with specific interventions that dramatically decreased and eventually extinguished the aggression. As a result of the successful outcome, the family now can participate in and enjoy social events. In addition, the young man has been transitioned to a less restrictive school setting and can participate in school activities.
